Mom’s story of her child’s scoliosis recovery

Watch Dylan’s mom tell why she chose Euclid Chiropractic for her young son’s scoliosis recovery.  J.J. had experienced chiropractic care at our office for her headaches and neck pain.  Her husband was also helped too.

After Dylan’s medical exam, J.J. was told he needed to see a medical specialist for scoliosis treatment.  Several of Dylan’s family members had scoliosis surgery (rods and screws put in their spine) with poor results.  J.J. did not want that for her son, so she chose Chiropractic firsts.

Dylan had chiropractic care, follow-up x-rays and infrequent care now.  4 years later Dylan’s scoliosis has been reduced to not require medical bracing or progressed to surgery.

Scoliosis X-ray Analysis: Chiropractic’s Non-surgical Treatment

The x-ray analysis is required to help determine the chance of successful correction through chiropractic adjustments and exercise.  Here is a sketch of a common “S-shaped” scoliosis x-ray.  Left is before chiropractic treatment; right is the correction:

As you can see, the goal of treatment is return the spine to a straight position from the front to back view.

As mentioned in our previous scoliosis posts/videos, knowing the degree of scoliosis is helpful determining the benefit of any treatment.

This medical approach is a “wait and see” method until bracing is introduced at 25 degrees.  Bracing has been shown to be ineffective, then surgery is warranted after 40 degrees.

The chiropractic approach starts treatment beginning at 5 to 10 degrees, where this conditions can have no harmful effects in a child’s future health.  Chiropractic treatment has shown to be the most beneficial before 25 degrees, before bracing would occur.

The best way to have successful treatment is to have a child get checked at the first signs of scoliosis, not their age.

In this video we study Riley’s x-rays over a period of 6 years. Here is his first x-ray at 6 years old:

His s-shaped curve is 9 and 7 degrees.  Medically, at 6 years old, this would not be a concern because of his age and degree of scoliosis.  His mother understood this approach, and chose Chiropractic care to reduce the scoliosis as much as possible NOW, to keep Riley healthy.

With initial correction, then adjustment periodically here is Riley’s x-ray at 10 years old:

His 5 and degree curve has been maintained over a 4 year period.  Scoliosis progression through his growth so far has been reduced and maintained.

Now at 12 years old after a growth spurt, his mother was worried it may have progressed.  Here is his results while maintaining regular adjustments:

The degrees where 8 and 6.  More than his previous x-ray, and below the 10 degrees where there can be some concern.

From 6 years old to the present, Riley is continually checked for scoliosis by a chiropractor.   This will allow his to grow and live a healthy life without the worry of needing scoliosis surgery.

The Scoliosis Exam to Prevent Bracing, Surgery

This exam helps parents and their child see the differences in posture, leg length and feet position that causes the different degrees of scoliosis.

Here is the introduction to the scoliosis (part 1):

Scoliosis: Parents’ Treatment Options

Let’s walk through each one.

The front posture (head to feet analysis):

  1. The head is shifted toward the left shoulder.

  2. Shoulders not even.  Left is lower; right higher.

  3. Hand level is not even. Left lower; right higher.

  4. Feet not straight. both penguin toed out.

This child would usually not have any pain from this abnormal posture, and feel balanced.  The reason is the upper and legs favor the left side, the hips/lower body favors the right.

From the side, a person with possible scoliosis would have abnormal side posture evaluation:

  1. Forward head posture is present by having the head too far in front of the shoulders.

  2. The upper back to hunchback by being rounded.

  3. The sides of the shoulders are rolling forward.

  4. The weight of the body is on the fronts of the feet.

With posture is compensating for the scoliosis in the previous image by becoming rigid, tight to maintain center of gravity.

To check for hip rotation and/or a longer leg causing scoliosis, a Leg Length Inequality Test can be performed:

  1. Have the child lye flat on their stomach.

  2. If the child’s feet are even.  If not, possible scoliosis.

  3. Raise both feet to 90 degrees.  If now even then lower leg length difference.

If this test is uneven in step 3, then the hips can be compensating to show another sign of scoliosis.

Parents, use all three parts of the exam to check your child for early scoliosis and posture problems as they grow.  Then you can get your child checked by your local chiropractor when early signs occur.  This presents the bracing and surgery as a result of severe scoliosis.  YOU are their best chance of keeping your child healthy.

Scoliosis: Parent Treatment Options

Today’s Scoliosis talk helps parents understand their options to help their child reduce and/or correct scoliosis.  Many children are first told they have this condition during a school or doctor exam before any symptoms such as pain occurs.  Here, you will hopefully reduce the anxiety of scoliosis by understanding your next step.

This is an example of advanced scoliosis:

First scoliosis can be genetic trait, passed from a mother or father to their child.  This may have been seen in a parent’s posture exam, or considered insignificant when the parent was a child.  Second, after an injury the body can compromise their posture to cause scoliosis.  Either way, let’s talk about the treatment options.

The medical approach thought process is “wait and see”.  The severity of scoliosis is measured by the degree of their curve.  They may monitor the degree progression through this chart:

In the medical approach there is no treatment before the child is braced at 25-40 degrees. It may slow down the progression, but it does NOT correct the scoliosis to a lower degree.  After 40 degrees, surgery will be recommended.  Yes, surgery will reduce the scoliosis degree, but her are the complications that lower the quality of a child’s life:

Now for the good news.  The other NON-surgical option.

The chiropractic approach looks to reduce the scoliosis degree from the start.  After an examination and x-ray analysis, treatments (chiropractic and exercise) are used to reduce the curve to as low as possible.  There is no wait and see period.  Then another x-ray is used to verify the results.
