Note: Coconut water is NOT the same as coconut juice. I was confused too!  The juice is a diluted version of the original water.  The juice is less expensive, but the water has more value regarding health benefits.

For Hydration:  Your body retains water in your muscles, etc. through electrolyte minerals found in salt (sodium and chloride) as well as potassium “Compared to Gatorade, coconut water was found to have higher amounts potassium, however was relatively less salt. The addition of table salt to the coconut water is suggested to compensate for the salt deficiency.” (New Zealand Medical Journal, 1979)Dr. Ratkovic’s alternative suggestion: drink similar proportions of coconut water, regular water, and Gatorade (or eating something healthy with salt) to rehydrate.

For Lowering Cholesterol & Blood Pressure: Two factors give evidence for this benefit.  1: The higher amounts of potassium found in coconut water dilutes sodium in your bloodstream.   2: Coconut water has the “good” fat, HDL’s, balancing out the LDL’s.  Here is a two week study that shows a decrease in blood pressure between 40-70% (West Indian Medical Journal, 2005).
