Scoliosis screening will occur in October/November for 7th and 8th graders in the surrounding schools.

The nurse performing these screenings has gone through minimal training (sometimes a video) to perform this test on hundreds of kids, one day a year.

Effectiveness of the Adam’s Test used to detect scoliosis is questionable according to pediatricians (See references below).

So what is the purpose of school scoliosis screening? “Early” detection of scoliosis (11-13 years old during 7th and 8th grade).  The difficulty lies  in waiting until junior high school to be check when the scoliosis may already be severe.

The problem is a positive screening of physical abnormalities may indicate severe scoliosis where surgery is inevitable.  As detailed in the previous article, over 25 degrees on x-ray, medical doctors will brace scoliosis patients that is ineffective in delaying surgery.

The solution is getting your child checked earlier for scoliosis. Scoliosis starts on average between 7 to 10 years old.  Early stages of scoliosis (between 5-20 degrees) is sometimes undetectable from only a physical exam and correctable before it progresses.

Pediatricians find it difficult to detect scoliosis in children when the primary reason for patient visits may be an ear infection or the flu.  Even when detected, the medical approach is only observation until 25 degrees.

Chiropractors specialize in spinal analysis and use specific procedures to detect scoliosis.  Chiropractor treat scoliosis in the early stages to correct and maintain a non-scoliotic spine.

Parent awareness is crucial especially when another family member has been diagnosed with scoliosis.  No parent wants their child to have unneeded surgery.
