The New Nancy after Back/Spine Recovery

Nancy was very athletic, going to the gym 3-5 times per week and running in competition.  About 6 months ago, she started to have back pain that increased in intensity.  And then the leg pain started that stopped her from running and limited her workouts.  As the problem progressed, the back and leg became more painful and worsened at night.

Nancy then came to Euclid Chiropractic for help.  She had an examination, then x-rays were taken.  When the doctors analyzed the x-rays with Nancy, she understand the spinal conditions were causing a disc herniation/bulge then neuropathy down the leg.

Nancy started Chiropractic adjustments and ultrasound therapy frequently to reduce the pain.  Posture exercises were introduced to first stretch the back and hips, and then to strengthen the spine.  Nancy did a lot of work to change her posture, so she could workout with better technique. The best part: Nancy was able to run again, which makes her feel physically and mentally GREAT!

Watch her story and realize how this one story could help hundred/thousands of people through Chiropractic.

Then this back stretch corrects posture of the neck and upper back along with secondary conditions (neck/upper back pain, headaches, shoulder pain, arm/hand numbness, etc.).

Beginner: Steps for this exercise starts with using a pillow about 6 inches thick in your middle back.  Place it right below the shoulders.  Start with 2 minutes with your hands at your side, then 2 minutes with your hands overhead.  Progressively at 1 minute in each position until you can do 4 and 4.

pillow-stretchAdvanced: In the same position, use a pillow about 12 inches thick in the same location.  If necessary, add a second small pillow (6 inches) to support the back of your head.  Progress from 2 minutes with your hands at your side, and 2 minutes with your hands overhead.  Then add a minute to each position to 5 and 5.

Feet Exam part of your Posture Evaluation

During a patient’s initial exam when they come into Euclid Chiropractic, the doctors check the person from their head to their feet; not just their spine.

When a person stands from the front view this is what to look for in a patient’s feet:

1. Do both feet point forward and are shoulder with apart (image below).  This is normal and will help maintain a good overall posture.

2. Do BOTH feet turn out (image below).  This would cause knee pressure/pain, back to stay in a forward posture.  Even cause a hunched back posture.

3. Does ONE foot turn out (image below).  This would cause your posture to shift. This would cause pressure/pain on one side of the knee/hip/back and twisting while the body tries to maintain center of gravity.

In treatment the patient consciously fixes their feet to stretch, walk, and exercise in the normal body and feet posture.  Overtime this should become the patient’s normal position.

Benefits of Ice vs. Heat

People are confused when to use ice or heat to reduce pain.  Especially when you are in pain, how do you decide which to apply?  Patients that come to Euclid Chiropractic are also unsure, but leave with why either ice or heat will help them.  Here is how this controversy is clarified.

heat-vs-ice-750x476

Heat Benefits: draws more blood in the tissue causing warmth and loosening.  This would help stiff joints, arthritis and tight muscles loosen.  For example, our senior patients have stiffness from arthritis so heat application would be a benefit.

Ice Benefits: when signs of disc and nerve pain including pain down the leg or arm, numbness, weakness, and a pinched feeling with spine motion.  Ice application cools and tightens to push the fluid/inflammation out of the tissue, reduces the disc swelling and numb the nerves. Then new blood (vitamins/minerals) circulates into the tissue to allow better healing.

With either therapy (ice or heat) better circulation is the goal.  See your Chiropractor to know which would be your best benefit.

Richard’s Spinal Neuropathy Recovery Story

After an emergency room trip and no help, Richard presented with a 10 out of 10 pain level going down his left arm.  He had not slept in 2 days from the pain that wanted him to cut off his own arm.

We took his x-ray at Euclid Chiropractic and saw the degenerative discs and arthritis in his neck spine.  The bulging discs caused pinching of the nerves resulting in the intense pain down Richard’s arm.

After a full report of his findings, it was agreed with Richard that we would perform aggressive chiropractic care two times per day.  This hopefully would reduce the disc pressure could be relieved enough to not cause a tear that would require surgery.
